Why You Should Hire a Marketing Agency

Someone once likened building your marketing team internally versus hiring an outside marketing agency to cooking with what’s in your fridge versus going to the farmer’s market.

Using internal employees has so many benefits. They are dependable, trustworthy, and efficient. They know your brand standards inside and out. They understand the culture and what is acceptable versus what might be out of bounds. And in these respects, it’s easy to think this is the most expedient and economical route.

But external expertise truly is like visiting a farmers’ market. You discover fresh, unexpected ingredients that might elevate your meal preparation to levels you hadn’t imagined! There’s also the likely potential that outside perspective can identify and elevate in-house assets that might’ve otherwise gone overlooked as part of the status quo.

On one side, is a scarce fridge. On the other side, is a bustling farmers market stall.

In my own experience, there were three primary reasons I sought a strong marketing agency partner, and I have to say, with the right partner, the results were “chef’s kiss”!

External agencies often have a team of experts who specialize in key areas like strategy, design, or copywriting. They focus solely on their craft and often stay ahead of trends and technologies your internal team may struggle to keep up with. According to a 2022 study by Hays, hiring managers find recruiting especially difficult for roles like data analytics, marketing automation, digital lead conversion, and SEO and SEM, all of which are critical to today’s digital marketing focus.

  • Scale
External agencies also offer the flexibility to scale resources up or down based on a campaign’s needs. Whether it’s a complex long-term effort or even a short-term social media blitz, agencies can quickly assemble the right talent to execute without the lag time of hiring, relocating, and/or training staff.
  • Creativity
One of the most impactful reasons to engage an agency is creativity. Often, an in-house team can be subject to an echo chamber effect or internal biases, or be pressured into “copycat marketing”. An agency can bring fresh perspectives, bold ideas, innovative campaigns, and unexpected solutions that resonate with customers. Allowing for – and even seeking – that ‘out of the box’ viewpoint can push your team and your organization in new and exciting ways.

A final piece of bonus advice: Finding the right agency is critical to experiencing the benefits. Start small. Assess the relationship with a single project and make sure that the agency and your team and culture have a chemistry that works. Because just like cooking, chefs describe their ultimate success as one part chemistry, one part art!
